First boarding school constructed in Machinga

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) has said government is constructing a boarding secondary school in Machinga though available designs indicate it is a day institution.

MoEST spokesperson Rebecca Phwitiko said this in an e-mailed response to a questionnaire on Thursday after University Students Association of Machinga (Usam) petitioned Dr Emmanuel Fabiano, Minister of Education, Science and Technology over lack of a government boarding secondary school in the district saying “it is an injustice that must be brought to an end”.

“Additional resources were identified to construct hostels and, therefore, what government is constructing in Machinga is in fact a district boarding secondary school,” said Phwitiko.

The petition, among other things, aimed to bring to the minister’s attention that there are some officials at Machinga District Council who are giving false information to chiefs that MoEST is constructing a boarding school in the district.

“We were disappointed to discover that the secondary school under construction is just an amelioration of Liwonde Community Day Secondary School,” reads the petition.
